Here at Real Fresh, there are a couple of buzzwords and names that get our attention real quick whenever we’re browsing our favorite websites. I was over at Discobelle today and I found this video. First thing I noticed, of course, was that it featured Pharrell, one of our heroes here at Real Fresh. Then I saw it was a Common track, who we haven’t heard from in a while. The video itself is badass, but the freestyle-esque rapping from our main man, Common Sense was even more impressive. His last album, Finding Forever, was great but the rapping itself was, in my opinion, sub par. Common made too many pop culture references, dating his material, and ten years from now, people won’t get those rhymes. It used to be different when Common was first blowin’ up back in the early 90s, his lines were existential and spiritual in a way that any generation could understand him. The single, “I Used To Love H.E.R” off Resurrection, was heralded as a timless ode to hip-hop. I want to say that he’s gone back to that style that led critics to say that he was one of the most conscious rappers in hip-hop so many years ago, but I can’t. The track itself is a single from Common’s upcoming album, Invincible Summer, due late next month. I’m still gonna pick it up, too, because, c’mon, this is just a single and I know that there’s gonna be better stuff on the album. The fact is, these lyrics are good, but it’s just not the real Common. Nice freestyle, Comm, but I hope that you ditch the Weezy-style spitting and get back to your roots. Sweet beat, though.
